Modern Family Stars Message To Australia On Marriage Equality

The Modern Family stars who play gay couple Mitch and Cam have issued a timely reminder to Australians that the world is waiting for us to pass marriage equality.

In a video released by Australian Marriage Equality and filmed at our beautiful Great Barrier Reef, actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet are astonished that Australia wouldn’t allow their respective characters Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker to marry.

“It’s a funny video with the serious message,” explains Australian Marriage Equality’s national director Rodney Croome, “that the right of loving same-sex couples to marry is becoming a defining difference between Australia and similar western countries like New Zealand.

In the ad, the two are baffled by our discrimination.

“Jesse, you know what I was thinking about when we were climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge the other day?” Stonestreet says.

“What’s that Eric?” Tyler responds.

“How I hate it when people get involved in other countries’ politics.”

“I cannot believe we’re shooting an episode of Modern Family in Australia.” Tyler says.

“I know, here we are at the Great Barrier Reef.” Stonestreet replies. Then the knockout punch comes from Tyler.

“It’s crazy. It’s crazy. You know what’s even crazier? That there’s no marriage equality in this country … Even though 65 per cent of Australians are in support of marriage equality.” They even banter about how Aussie gay icons like Olivia Newton-John and Kylie Minogue.

Realising that gay marriage is legal in New Zealand, the pair soon resolve to hop across the ditch.

“It’s not politics, it’s about love and human rights,” Stonestreet says. Many Australians couldn’t agree more.
